13 Days family Safari
Arusha, Tanzania Foot Slopes
$7,800
Day 1: Arrive in Tanzania – Arusha Welcome to Tanzania! Upon your arrival into Kilimanjaro Airport and after clearing customs and immigration, you will be met by your Tanzania representative who will transfer you to the Hotel for overnight at The Karama lodge. to start and Safari within Tanzania. Dinner, breakfast at the lodge. Day 2: Arusha National Park After breakfast, you are met by an English speaking safari tour guide who will conduct a short briefing before departure. Thereafter drive to the east to the Arusha National Park. Small by size but among the places in the world it is the closest national park to both the famous Arusha city alias the Geneva of Africa (30 km) as well as the Kilimanjaro International Airport, thus making it ideal for 1-day tours. Arusha national park is not only green all year round, but it is one of the most beautiful and topographically varied parks in Tanzania. The park’s three most significant features include the rugged Mount Meru (Tanzania’s second-highest peak at 4,566m), the notably different colored Momella Lakes, and the 3 km wide Ngurdoto Crater, which was naturally formed about fifteen million years ago! You will have a hot lunch at the picnic lunch at the shores of the Momella Lakes will remain in your memory for years with images of the Flamingos and the fabulous views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro mountain. After lunch, continue with a game to the Ngurdoto Crater. Expected wildlife to be seen in the areas includes African buffalo, elephants, hippos, giraffe, warthogs, antelopes, zebras, blue monkeys and sometimes if lucky, you can see leopard and hyena. Late afternoon drive back to the African tulip Hotel for overnight. Dinner and breakfast is included Day 3-4: Arusha – Tarangire National Park We will collect you from your hotel after breakfast in Arusha and following a 2-3 hour drive, you will arrive at the Tarangire National Park. In this region, Hemmingway often went on big game hunting safaris. After the formation of the national parks in 1970, they turned the seasonal marshes and the endless savannah that one sees today into, once again, profitable hunting grounds. Today, however, cameras thankfully have replaced the elephant guns. The Tarangire National Park has the highest density of elephants in North Tanzania and you can view these animals all year round in which the herds often can reach an impressive number of 300 animals. The Tarangire River has water all year round and during the dry season, between July and October, many animals from the surrounding areas come to the river for drinking. If you visit the park during the dry season, you will witness an unforgettable natural wonder as you can observe wonderful creatures such as lions, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests, and zebras as well as various types of antelopes and gazelles and with a little luck, you can also spot a python! This area is during the dry season also a haven for bird watchers with over 550 different species including the Masai Ostrich -the world’s largest bird. Around lunchtime, you will stop at a suitable picnic place before the afternoon is dedicated to more wildlife watching. Before sunset, you will be taken to Tarangire Sopa Lodge for overnight. Dinner, breakfast, lunch Day 5: Tarangire National park – Lake Natron After breakfast, you will leave the area around Tarangire National Park and head to the multicultural village of Mto wa Mbu. From here you will travel on a spectacular and very bumpy gravel road along the Rift Valley Escarpment with Ol Doinyo Lengai “the holy mountain” of the Masai in the distance. Today’s destination is the typical Masai village of Ngare Sero in the hot and dusty. Dinner and overnight at Lake-Natron-Tented-Camp. Dinner, breakfast, lunch Day 6: full day to explore the area of Lake Natron Full day to explore the area: Lake Natron (Flamingoes!), hike to a waterfall in a deep gorge, visit a Masai village, etc. Dinner and overnight at Lake-Natron-Tented-Camp Day 7: Lake Natron – Serengeti National Park After an early start after breakfast, you will travel along adventurous dirt tracks with breath-taking views as your vehicle climbs out of the Rift Valley to reach the grassy plains of the Serengeti by midday. Serengeti means “endless plains” in the language of the Masai and you will see the grassland savannah stretching to the horizon. The Serengeti is the most famous park in Tanzania and it is home to the largest animal migration on the planet – hundreds of thousands of animals trek to find fresh grass and water. You will overnight at Lobo Wildlife Lodge. Dinner, breakfast, lunch Day 8-9: Full day game drive in Serengeti National park The entire days are dedicated for Tanzania family safari game viewing in the Serengeti National Park. You will either go on a full day game drive or join early morning and afternoon drives in the Seronera area. Between December and May, huge herds of wildebeests and zebras will be seen, with calves and foals being born between January and March. The Seronera area is also the best place to spot the shy and nocturnal leopard. You will spend the night at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge. Dinner, breakfast, lunch Day 10: Serengeti National Park – Ngorongoro Conservation Area The morning is set aside for another game drive in the Serengeti and you might spot some creatures that you haven’t seen yet. Animals tend to be more active in the morning before the temperatures soar around midday. After lunch, you will leave the plains of the Serengeti and travel to the highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You will overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge directly on the Ngorongoro Crater’s edge with a view over the collapsed volcano. It is a perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner at sunset. Dinner, breakfast, lunch Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater-Lake Manyara escarpment Rise and shine! It is up at daybreak to take on the steep path leading down into the 600 m deep crater. The slopes are forested but soon the landscape changes to savannah with the occasional acacia tree here and there. The wildlife in the crater is just breath-taking and with a little luck, you might see the “Big Five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. You should also see warthogs, wildebeests, zebras, hippos and some of the more than 500 bird species of the area. After an entire morning of game viewing and a picnic lunch in the crater, you will travel to Lake Manyara escarpment where you will overnight at Lake Manyara Wildlife Lodge. Dinner, breakfast, Lunch Day 12: Lake Manyara national park to Arusha town After lovely breakfast, we leave for Lake Manyara National park for a day game with picnic lunch boxes, This Park with its shallow alkaline lake stretches along the base of the Rift Valley Escarpment. Lake Manyara attracts thousands of birds, including huge flocks of flamingos. Other animals in the park include buffaloes, elephants, hippos and Masai giraffes as well as troops of boisterous baboons and monkeys in the forests. The park once became famous for tree-climbing lions and if you are lucky to spot them you will be amused by the site of these animals lounging on branches in the acacia trees. After a game drive in the park, you will ascend to the Ngorongoro highlands, where you will overnight on a campsite situated on the crater’s edge with magnificent views of the caldera below. Late afternoon drive to Arusha for overnight at the Mount Meru Hotel. Machame climb 7 days
Old Moshi, Tanzania
$1,700
Machame Route Machame is a challenging and at times steep trek with stunning scenery as it traverses through Kilimanjaros 5 diverse climatic zones. This route provides the opportunity to “trek high and sleep low” which is considered important in minimizing the potential for altitude sickness. The climb starts above the picturesque mountain village of Machame to the south of Kilimanjaro. After passing through the Machame forest and into the moorland zone, we scramble up and over some rocks and eventually emerge onto the Shira Plateau. We then advance counter-clockwise traversing below the southern face of Kibo, climb Lava Tower for magnificent 360 degree panoramas, ascend the Great Barranco Wall, a challenging and exhilarating rock scramble, and approach Uhuru Summit from Barafu or Kossovo Camp and the ridge that abuts the Southeast Valley. The climb from Barafu offers incredible views of Mawenzi Peak and Kilimanjaro’s remnant volcanic cone. Day 1: Arrive Tanzania On your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport /shuttle bus stand a member of our staff will be at holding a Trekili Eco Expeditions placard. You will then be transferred to the Hotel/’ Day 2: Arusha-Machame Gate to Machame Camp (Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner) Depart Machame Gate and trek upwards through the montane rainforest, characterized by dense vegetation, a muddy trail and short sections of steep climbs where you may hear the calls of many exotic birdsand if we are lucky we may see blue monkeys on the forest canopy and hear the grunting calls of the magnificent black colobus monkeyswith their long ‘cape’ of white hair and a flowing white tail. Our first campsite, Machame Camp, is right after the dense tree cover in an area with lower but still thick bush where Podocarpus (African yellow-wood), Hagenia and Hypericum (St John’s Wort) dominate. In the evening you may hear the unmistakable shrieking call of the tree hyrax Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp(Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner) Today we continue through increasingly sparse trees and bushes into moorlands. Picturesque hanging mosses often cover trees offering an ethereal quality to the landscape. The day finishes with Shira Camp, which is on a small plateau in the high moorlands, and features views of Kibo in the northwest and Mount Merutowards the east. White necked ravenscan be seen throughout the day and around our campsite. Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner) Today we turn east and continue to climb “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) through increasingly rocky and desolate terrain. We will leave the moorland behind and continue up a rocky path through typical Kilimanjaro mountain vegetation of Senecios and Lobelia. We will pass through the alpine moorland zone where plants are extremely hardy and consist of lichens, grasses, and heather, to reach Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert zone. We take lunch at Lava Tower (4630m) and for those who feel up to it you can undertake an optional rock scramble (non-technical) to the top of Lava Tower where you will have spectacular panoramic vistas of the Karanga Valley below, Shira Plateau and the spectacular Western Breach above. From Lava Tower, we descend steeply for 2 hours down more than 600m into the Great Barranco Valley. This descent affords fantastic views and some great photo opportunities of the Western Breach and Breach Wall. You will also feel the clear benefits of this acclimatization day as we lose altitude down to the camp. Barranco Camp is set on a col (flat area) enclosed on three sides by the Breach Walls, and the Kibo massif itself. Hanging glaciers shimmer in the sunshine above amidst the eerie landscape of plants such as the giant groundsels, and the uniquely endemic Giant Lobelia. This is definitely the toughest day so far, but incredibly beautiful. Day 5: Baranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) Today we undertake the Great Barranco Wall – an imposing face above Barranco camp. A steady climb up the eastern wall takes us just below the Heim Glacier, where we may have some breathtaking views of the Heim Glacier and Mt. Kilimanjaro depending upon the weather and any cloud cover. Our trail continues down into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley, where we finish this second acclimatization day at Karanga Camp at 4046m. Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) Our trail continues down into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley. Here the temperature will grow colder as we follow the trail climbing through this barren and dry landscape up to the Barafu camp. Barafu is the Swahili word for “ice”, and the camping area is on a ridge in a narrow and exposed flat area. Here there are ever-present powerful winds blowing down from the mountain peaks. Our campsite at 4600m offers spectacular views of the nearby peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.

In preparation for your final ascent tonight, you will familiarize yourself with the terrain before dark, and prepare your equipment and thermal clothing for the summit attempt. Sleep will be difficult, though you will to retire to your tents after dinner to rest for the 1385m final ascent to the roof of Africa. Day 7: Barafu Camp
to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp(Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner) We will rise early to leave camp at around 12am and after a warm drink and a light snack, you will begin the most difficult though most rewarding day of the trek – your hike to the roof of Africa. After approximately 6 hours of slow but strenuous hiking, you will reach the rim of the main crater, Stella Point, at 5685m.

At this point we stop to rest, eat lunch and take in the views over the clouds. From Stella Point the trail is normally snow-covered, and every step of the two-hour final ascent to Uhuru peak is challenging. Passing alongside the iridescent blue Rebmann and Tarzel glaciers we reach Elveda Point (5882) we can see Uhuru Peak now only minutes away. The roof of Africa is within your grasp. Arriving at the summit you feel a huge sense of elation and accomplishment you have done it, you have made it to the highest point in Africa. We spend as much time as you need to appreciate your accomplishment, as this is a day to remember for the rest of your life! The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions and temperature. We start back down the same trail, and descend to Barafu camp. Here you will have a well earned but short rest and remove some of your many layers of clothing as the day begins to heat up. We head down the rock and scree path into the moorland zone, reaching the forest, and eventually arriving at Mweka Camp in the early afternoon where a hot shower and meal awaits. Today is the longest, and the most mentally and physically challenging of the trek, but a life changing day that will stay with you forever, as you have conquered the summit of Kilimanjaro. Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate-Arusha (Breakfast,Lunch ) Today your legs will be further tested as the trail descends steeply through the lush Mweka rain forest. The trail is steep in places and the going slippery if wet. The route follows the crest of a broad ridge separating two river valleys until it meets with a road that leads us for the last 40 minutes to the Mweka Park Gates where we stop for a well deserved picnic lunch where successful hikers will receive their summit certificates (gold for Uhuru Peale, Green for Stella point) from the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority.
